In the Human Rights Council, Australia raised its concern over the continuous implementation of death penalty by Saudi Arabia against juveniles at the time of the alleged offence, and considered that in the context of the violations of International laws.
The statement that was presented on March 8, 2017 by the representative of the Australian Embassy in the UN in Geneva Mr. Lachlan McCleve Strahan, came during an interactive dialogue while commenting on the annual report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. ZaidRaad Al Hussein, and during the oral discussion that addressed many of human rights situations and challenges around the world.
Moreover, in another intervention and on the behalf of eleven countries (Afghanistan – Chile- Mexico- Angola- Nepal- Peru- Senegal- Spain- Slovakia- Ukraine) in which they are members of the Human Rights Council with another 47 countries, Starhan has noted that their membership is oblige them committed to secure and protect the human rights around the world.
Also, the statement stressed on the importance of member states’ compliance with the basic international laws for protecting human rights, through their cooperation with the Council and with all its mechanisms and supporting it technically. Furthermore, the intervention affirmed on the importance of ratifying all the agreements and international laws as well as involving the civil society in applying it.
